CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

BRYNN FELT SICK over the questions being tossed at Caleb. The TBI agents believed him guilty of cold-blooded murder when he was innocent. He’d been with her during those four critical hours. How could they believe Caleb, a brother in blue, had no conscience?

“Come on, Montgomery,” McCloud snapped. “You expect us to believe you wouldn’t kill to protect the woman you love?”

Brynn held her breath as she waited for his answer. He would kill if necessary. What interested her was whether Caleb would deny he was in love with her. This wasn’t the first time the agents had used the phrase. Each time, Caleb let the words stand.

“If Winslow pointed a weapon at her, I would have shot him.”

“But a pistol wasn’t used, was it?” Pell watched Caleb. “His neck was broken. Someone came up behind him and snapped his neck as pretty as you please. No muss, no fuss. A professional job. You’re a professional, aren’t you, Montgomery?”

“I’m a cop,” Caleb answered, his tone flat. “Not a mercenary or a vigilante.”

McCloud leaned toward him. “You sure about that? I hear you have a second job, you and your cop brothers.”

Caleb said nothing.

A snort. “Not so fast with a comeback this time. Not going to deny you work black ops?”

“Do you moonlight, McCloud?”

“We’re not talking about me. I don’t do mercenary work. I work security for football and basketball games.”

“Fortress hired my brothers and I to rescue hostages and free human trafficking victims. We don’t consider that mercenary work.”

The agent waved that aside. “Semantics.”

Back and forth the interrogation went. To Brynn, it seemed like a tennis match. Sometimes Caleb scored a point. Sometimes, the agents came out ahead.

Through it all, Cam watched in rapt attention, utterly silent. Finally, he muttered, “This isn’t good.”

“Why do you say that?”

“The agents are convinced Caleb is guilty. They aren’t looking for another perp.” He glanced at Brynn. “Be prepared.”

“For what?”

“An interview. The agents have to confirm Caleb’s alibi, and they aren’t likely to take your word for his whereabouts. You aren’t a neutral third-party. They expect you to lie for him.”

“Unlike you?”

He inclined his head. “I haven’t known him long.” Cam flashed a grin. “I’m also not dating him.”

“There’s that.”

Pell’s voice dragged Brynn’s attention back to the ongoing interrogation. “You claim you were with your girlfriend and the Park City cop during the hours in question. You could have slipped away without anyone noticing, couldn’t you?”

Caleb stared, silent.

“I’ll take that as a yes. Special Forces soldier and mercenary with unique training.” A slow smile curved Pell’s mouth, a smirk on his face. “Yeah, you could have slipped away easily. Your brothers would cover for you with no questions asked.”

“We have an excellent security system at the ranch. You want the security cam recordings? We’ll provide you with a copy.”

“Doctored, I’ll bet.”

“That’s enough,” David said. “You’ve made it clear you don’t believe anything Caleb says. What happened to giving a fellow cop the benefit of the doubt?”

“Evidence speaks for itself.”

“What evidence? This is circumstantial. You showed a text message arranging a meeting between Winslow and someone who claimed to be Caleb.
